HENDERSON, KY (4/16/12) – On Monday morning, June 16, 2012, at approximately 5:04 AM, Officer Tracy Green with the Henderson Police Department was parked at the Second Street Boat Ramp when a car sped by him and drove into the Ohio River.
According to Officer Green, the brake lights were on, but the vehicle did not stop. Officer Green immediately called for assistance. Officers Nathan Cobb, Daniel Burden and Jared Shehorn responded to the scene. The three officers swam out to the vehicle and extricated Nelson. The moment that 71-year-old, Jerry Nelson was pulled from the vehicle, the car sank.
Nelson was semi-conscious and made statements to the officers that led them to believe that the accident was a result of a medical condition.
Nelson was transported to Methodist Hospital. The Henderson Fire Dept. and Henderson County Rescue Squad also responded to the scene.
