alyssa1MADISONVILLE, Ky. (4/4/13) – Some parents in Western Kentucky are bringing up outstanding youth citizens, instilling early the values of altruism, manners, dedication, leadership, teamwork, and initiative.
 
Alyssa Cartwright is a four year old who’s done more for humanity already in her four years than some adults have in their whole lives. Up to this point, her compassionate nature has primarily designated her to meet the needs of animal shelters all over Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana. She also does work with area Toys for Tots programs at Christmas time to fulfill part of her community points for America’s Queen of the Commonwealth Pageants, a national series of pageants which partners with the Humane Society Organization and the Anti-Bullying Organization. Her diligence won her the title of Humanitarian Queen in this past 2012-2013 pageant, a role in which Alyssa proudly serves, enabling her to more formally represent her four legged friends who have no voice of their own.
 
Her contributions to the shelters include collecting needed items throughout the year from different stores, vendors, and donators. She collects pet foods, grooming items, pet toys, treats, pet beds, cages, carriers, and anything else useful that anyone can and will donate to help the cause, as animal shelters are typically funded by grants and community donations. Sometimes Alyssa teams with some of her fellow pageant contestants to double the effort in a trip.
 
Alyssa and her mother, Sheena Cartwright, often go to pageants that Alyssa is not contesting in, where they set up a table to collect donations and items for the shelters that she visits. The two have a full schedule attending adoption events and visiting various locations to pass out flyers and collect donations. Alyssa expressed her enthusiasm in the job, “I help animals because I love them!” She said her favorite part of the job is when she gets to hold the animals. Other areas of interest for Alyssa are that of a typical four year old girl: Jumping, playing, eating and going to school at Clay Elementary.

 

Alyssa has quite a few pets of her own that she cares for including a ferret, a bird, a rabbit, hamsters, cats, and two dogs, Midnight, and Priscilla, who was adopted from the Marshall County Animal Shelter.

The next Queen of the Commonwealth Pageant Alyssa will contest in will be held in Morganfield on April 14. At the time of her interview with SurfKY News in late March, she was in the lead for her community points earned for the whole system of the pageant, said mother Sheena. Alyssa is ambitiously petting, feeding, and caring her way to the top of the ranks in the pageant scene, and her contributions do not go unrecognized in the rest of the world around her.
