GREENVILLE, Ky. (5/7/13) – "Weather permitting" seemed to be the only question left unanswered at Monday, May 6th's meeting of the planning committee for the Muhlenberg County's upcoming first ever "Take a Kid Fishing" Day, set for Luzerne Lake on the 189 Bypass this Saturday.

This inaugural event, designed to give many children throughout the county their first experience with a rod and reel, has been painstakingly planned for months, and the hard working attendees covered just about all the bases at a midday meeting in the Muhlenberg Cooperative Extension offices on Monday.

On-hand were Muhlenberg Count Judge Executive Rick Newman, Greenville City Administrator Ben Van Hoosen, Emily Knight and Wallace Slinker, both of the Muhlenberg Conservation District, John Thompson of PACS/RSVP, Tommy Barton of the Greater Muhlenberg Parks and Recreation System, and Vickie Slinker who is a local business owner. SurfKY News fishing and hunting expert Randy "Big Country" Adams, who has also worked tirelessly to make sure this event is a success, could not attend the meeting, but will be on hand Saturday.

All in the room agreed that the "go to" person in the room when it comes to making a "Take a Kid Fishing" event the very best it can be was Charles Turner of the Pennyrile R.C. and D. District office in Hopkinsville. Turner told SurfKY News he has helped plan numerous fishing events like this one in Cadiz, Hopkinsville and numerous other counties. He said this event, "which started years ago in Hopkinsville, has now grown to include as many as 1650 participates."

"The majority of kids that participate in something like this have probably never been fishing before, and they are just real excited about catching that first fish. The very positive thing you see from this is that you have the whole family involved. The children, mom, dad, grandparents, aunts and uncles." Turner stressed.

"We'll give prizes for the largest fish, the most fish caught, and even the smallest fish. The age groups include ages 3 to 5 year olds, ages 6 to 8, 9 to 11, and 12 to 15 year olds. The winner in each of those four age groups will receive a free bicycle. Each participant can only win one bike though, because we want to spread out the winners so we have as many as possible." Turner said.

Judge Newman said "the positive thing is this is all for the children. This will be the first time fishing for a lot of them. It gives them a chance to see what it’s like. Also, I want to a special thanks to R.C. and D. and to this cooperative extension office, to Vicki, Emily and Wallace for being involved in this. They've really helped us get this off the ground. It's something I've wanted to do ever since I began going to R.C. and D. meetings six years ago. I thought, 'I'm going to see if I can get Charles to come over here to make sure we do this initial first year right. I always wondered why we didn't have one of these in Muhlenberg County. And I tell you, it wouldn't be possible if we didn't have the collaboration of so many great people and businesses in the county and outside the county as well." Newman stressed.

Sponsors include the Muhlenberg Fiscal Court, Uncle Lee's, First Security Bank, the Muhlenberg County Fiscal Court, Atoms, The Greenville Tourism Commission, 1st Kentucky Bank, the Central City Convention Center and the Greater Muhlenberg Parks & Recreation System.

Other sponsors include First National Bank, Muhlenberg Conservation District, Pogue Group, Muhlenberg County Farm Bureau, the City of Greenville, Old National Bank, Harvey Family Towing, Double S Farms, H & R Agri Power in Owensboro, Crop Product and services in Anton, Beck Hybrids, Southern States and Wester's Body Shop.

The rain date for the event will move to June 8th. Starting time is 9am and runs until noon. Awards will be handed out as soon as fishing is complete. All parents and kids should bring their own rod and reels, bait, safety jackets, and any other items they may need. No boats allowed. The lake will be stocked with over 650 pounds of fish. Parking will be provided in the baseball area near the lake. There will also be a casting, and reeling competition for all age divisions. Pre-Registration fee Cost is $1 per child/adult, includes lunch and bottled water. Each child receives a free t-shirt also. Day of the event Cost is $2. Prizes will be given out to age groups 3-5, 6-8, 9-11, 12-15.
