Muhlenberg Relay for Life Brings County Together in Fight Against Cancer

relay 300MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (5/13/13) – The Muhlenberg Ag and Convention Center holds many events throughout the year, but none brings out as many people from all walks of life more than the Muhlenberg Relay for Life. Everyone involved this weekend was dedicated to one cause ... to help the American Cancer Society in its fight against this dreaded disease that affects so many families throughout the county, state and nation. This year's relay was held from Friday, May 10, at 5pm to 6am Saturday.

Jacklyn Hasley, of Graham, is a member of the Muhlenberg Relay for Life committee. Hasley told SurfKY News, "I've been involved in the relay for about ten years now, because my grandfather and grandmother were both affected by cancer. I'm hoping we can find a cure in my lifetime so we don't have to hear those words 'You have cancer'.” Hasley stressed. "We appreciate the community support. For our small community, it's wonderful that everyone pulls together for this event every year."

Circuit judge Brian Wiggins went on stage to play guitar while performing several inspiring Gospel songs. Wiggins told SurfKY that the "two most important reasons he is a part of Relay for Life are because my mother, Elizabeth Wiggins, is a cancer survivor, so I always like to take part in this in honor of her. Also her mother, my grandmother, Agnes Noffsinger, suffered from cancer as well. It struck her late in life when she was in her late eighties and she did not survive that, so I like to take part in memory of her as well." Wiggins said.

Master of ceremonies, David Richey, vice president of First Security Bank, also has personal reasons to take part in the fight against cancer.

"The relay for life is very special to me because I have had a father, a mother, and a sister who have all died of cancer. The people involved in this cause in Muhlenberg County work extremely hard and are very dedicated to this cause. They do this with a passion. I am just a small player in all this. I know this a great event for the county." Richey said.

Eighth grader Kassidy Alward, says she support the relay because "I have a mother who has battled with breast cancer, and I've had other family members who've had cancer as well, so that's why I'm here."

Although the relay did not reach its goal of $100,000, they did come close. As of Monday morning a total of $72.000 had been raised, according to Jackie Hasley, of the Relay committee.

If you would like to help in the fight against cancer you can call the regional office in Owensboro at 270-683-0778.
