Hooked on Science - Fireproof Balloon

hooked science 300KENTUCKY (5/14/13) - Just like a sharp object can weaken a balloon, so can a flame. So, how can you make a balloon fireproof? Jason Lindsey aka “Mr. Science” say you can and all you need are a few ingredients from around the house.

INGREDIENTS
• 2 Balloons
• Water
• Grill Lighter

INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1: Blow up a balloon and tie the end so the air stays inside.
STEP 2: Have an adult ignite the grill lighter and place the flame under the balloon. What happened?
STEP 3: Place 1/4 of a cup of water into a balloon.
STEP 4: Carefully blow up the balloon and tie the end so the air and water stay inside the balloon.
STEP 5: Have an adult ignite the grill lighter and place the flame under the balloon. What happened?

EXPLANATION
The balloon with water does not pop! The water inside the balloon absorbs the heat from the flame, keeping the balloon from bursting.
