'Udderly Kentucky' Milk Helps State Farmers

HENDERSON, Ky. (7/10/13) – A new brand of milk rolling out in Kentucky Walmarts will benefit dairy farmers across the Commonwealth.

The milk, known as Udderly Kentucky, was unveiled Monday by Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner James Comer. He said 100 percent of the milk will come from Kentucky farms.

“I am confident that today will go down in the history of Kentucky as a significant turning point for the dairy industry in Kentucky,” said Comer at a press conference in the dairy section of the Walmart Supercenter on Greg Lag Way.

The new brand of milk is the result of a deal between Kentucky Proud, Walmart and Prairie Farms.

Comer said Udderly Kentucky will be sold by the gallon and offered in whole, 2 percent, 1 percent, and skim varieties. He added that there are 105 dairy farms in Kentucky that will produce it.

“You don't have to wonder about where your milk comes from with Udderly Kentucky,” said Comer. “It comes from hard working dairy farm families and we are very proud of that.”

The dairy industry has declined from 3500 dairy farms in 1980 to less than 800 today. Comer said the goal of the project was to turn that number around. Each farm will receive a premium of $0.07 per gallon of milk. That will  add up to approximately $19,000 per farm for each of the 105 Kentucky farms producing the milk.

“That is significant,” said Comer. “Nothing that I can think of in the last decade has had a greater farm impact than this project on our struggling farm families in Kentucky.”

Dante Carpenter is one of the dairy farmers helping to create Udderly Kentucky milk. He said he's very happy to be producing milk that will go to Kentucky consumers.

“I think it will have a large impact,” he said. “The added income will help us entirely. If you're looking to the next generation, this could become bigger and better things. I think this is the only beginning.”

Udderly Kentucky milk will be processed by Prairie Farms Dairy in Somerset.
