OPD Introduces New Mobile Command Center

OWENSBORO, Ky. (8/21/13) -- The new 2013 Coachman Freelander 31 ft. Command Center was unveiled Wednesday and it will be a major tool for the Owensboro Police Department for the use of large scale incident scenes, civil disturbances, hostage situations, explosive devices, and major natural disaster scenes.

OPD will now be able to coordinate and execute a response to emergency situations that will require a prolonged OPD, Daviess County Sheriff, Owensboro and Daviess County Fire Departments’ presence. The Command Center will also serve as a backup dispatch center with radios, antennas, and satellite phones from the former vehicle.

The Command Center was secured from a $50,000 federal grant through the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security. The Owensboro-Daviess County Central Dispatch also used budgeted funds in the amount of $17,000 to be used for additional equipment.

OPD anticipates using the Command Center as an educational tool to inform the community about the equipment they use. To show this, the center will be set up at events around the Owensboro-Daviess County area such as International Bar-B-Q Festival next year.
