My Kentucky Roads: Big City Market & Coffee Bar

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (11/2/13) – After living in Louisville, Ky., for many years, owner Jenny Gibson, a native to Madisonville, made a conscious decision to move back home. With her, she brought her passion of “big city” living and the energy to redevelop downtown Madisonville.

“Living in Louisville for a lot of years, you start really missing some things and despite the fact of all the great things in a small town, we have to admit small towns aren’t perfect,” said owner, Jenny Gibson. “Many small towns aren’t geared to have all the amenities a bigger city would.”

With her accumulated experiences in the metropolitan areas, she strives to provide the local residents and visitors with a greater experience in terms of the product quality, great service, the environment, and the inventory not usually available in a local market.
 
“What I’m trying to do is create a business that is really a combination of little pieces of very successful businesses in bigger cities,” said Gibson. “I hope with all those small pieces we can combine into a commercial enterprise, we have got to gauge to the size of our local market.”

Gipson uses an analogy to describe how important it is to always keep an open-mind to new ideas and changes. She also hopes that she can continue to educate and expose these new ideas to community.

“I love Velveeta Cheese, I grew up eating it. But after having a lot of other cheeses and being exposed to new things, I really like them better,” said Gibson. “I mean, I still like my Velveeta for my macaroni and cheese but we are trying to provide more options that before now, nobody has been willing to provide.”

Almost all the items in the store are from a local source. There are a lot of paintings by accomplished local artists, jewelry, scarfs, wire art and other hand-made items for a reasonable price. Gibson gets her fresh French bread and Cellar Door Chocolates from Louisville. Her coffee is from Kentucky Company, which is a medium roast specialty grade coffee that comes from a single source in Costa Rica. Gibson has also reached over into Greenville, Ind., to offer the community with aged goat cheeses.

“Most of the items are representing our local talent and the money spent goes back to them, which helps support our local economy,” Gibson said. “There are a few things that aren’t local but I try to stay as close as home as possible. I think people will appreciate this, my goal is to bring in a draw.”

Big City Market & Coffee Bar is located on 23-25 Sugg Street, Big City Market & Coffee Bar, which was also part of the downtown Madisonville redevelopment.
