Latham is a 2010 graduate of Muhlenberg High School, and the son of Mike and Kim Latham of Central City. When not on the golf course, he is busy finishing his senior year at Transylvania University. Latham and two other Transylvania students were the only three Kentuckians chosen for this year's tournament.
"Selection of the players is based on their status from the previous season,” said Latham. “So all the players were either All-American from Divisions One, Two or Three. This was probably the most fun tournament I have played in ever as far as the way it was run and the experiences we had.”
Latham noted that it was an unforgettable tournament from the very start.
"The opening ceremony was probably the most awesome experience of all,” he said. “Former pro-golfer and ESPN commentator Brandel Chamblee was there. He was the emcee and they brought us out on the stage during the two hour event. We received an overwhelming welcome from the Phoenix community. Then, paratroopers from the local military base landed right behind us, as we sat on the stage. That was truly an inspiring, once-in-a-lifetime experience."
Latham also mentioned that the most important and humbling part of the event was carrying a golf bag embroidered with the name of a fallen American soldier.
"At the end of the tournament, the bags were auctioned off with funds from the auction going to help in the educational needs of children and spouses of military service men and women killed or disabled defending our country," he said.
Latham admits that although his college major is computer science, attending the Patriot All-American Tournament makes the idea of being a professional golfer very tempting.
"This tournament really spoils you, I have to admit,” he said. “They treat you as close to PGA players as any tournament I've been in."
