pillsHENDERSON, Ky. (6/3/14) — The Henderson Police Department will host a Prescription Drug Drop Saturday, June 7, 2014, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Residents may bring their unused medication to the Henderson Police department for proper disposal.

This program will be for medication only. No medical equipment such as hypodermic syringes with needles, injection pens or lancets will be accepted.

Vitamins and supplements can be discarded by following the FDA’s guidelines:

Take items out of their original containers and mix them with an undesirable substance, such as used coffee grounds or kitty litter in a sealed bag, empty can, or other container to prevent the medication from leaking or breaking out of a garbage bag. The medication will be less appealing to children and pets, and unrecognizable to people who may intentionally go through your trash.

Also, local retail pharmacies such as CVS, Rite-Aid, and Walgreen’s and others, sell special envelopes at the pharmacy counter. The postage-paid envelopes cost $2.99 to $3.99 each, and allow people to mail their unwanted prescription and OTC medications through the US Postal Service to a licensed, secure facility for safe destruction.

Controlled substances are excluded from this program by law.
