Dachshund Races to be Hot Dog at Event

HENDERSON, Ky. (7/16/14) — Come rain or shine, the Ellis Park Grand Champion Race for wiener dogs will be Saturday, July 19 on the main track.

Local dachshund Rascal Flatts is a 2-year-old, 13-pound wiener dog, and has been training since he was 10 weeks old.

“We always knew, when we got him, he would eventually be racing,” said owner Shawn Freels. “For the past five months, we have had him in a training program.”

Freels said they do not feed him human food, except carrots.

“We don’t give him people food,” said Freels. “He has a very strict balanced diet, but we do give him carrots as treats … he loves them.”

Last Saturday, Rascal came in second place in the Winner’s Circle and qualified for the Grand Champion finals.

“Rascal came in second place in the Winner’s Circle, this past Saturday,” said Freels. “I put him in a starting box and my wife was at the end of the track. His ‘go’ words were, ‘go to momma.’ From the very first time we started doing this, he would take right off.”

The dogs will be racing on a 50-yard track, where they have a chance to win a bone and a deluxe chew toy.

Freels said he and his wife are also foster parents to other dachshunds.

“We are always looking for foster parents,” said Freels. “By providing temporary homes, transports or helping with fundraising programs, the fostering program is a great way to help animals in need.”
