Swinging for Sadie Raises $6,000 for Scholarship Fund

Sadies-iPod-638Sadie Beth SmithMUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (7/23/14) — Sadie Beth Smith lived life to its fullest.

The daughter of Brian and April Smith of Drakesboro, Sadie cherished time with her close-knit family and friends, church activities, school, cheerleading and playing softball.

When Smith passed away in a car accident in 2012 at age 17, those who loved her, along with many who never met her, came together to create the Sadie Beth Smith Scholarship Fund. The sole fundraiser for the scholarship has been a marathon softball tournament held each July since 2012 at the Dunmor and Weir baseball parks. The first two events raised enough money for 13 scholarships for deserving Muhlenberg County High School graduates.

The third annual event held this past weekend, raised an additional $6,000 for the scholarship fund, according to Sadie's uncle, Tyler Smith.

"I can't thank everyone enough," Smith said. "We want to thank all of our family members along with Linda Porter and the Nelson brothers for allowing us to have this tournament, everyone at each field that helped, Jeff Travis, Macey Wilson, Shannon Joines Clack and everyone that helped at the Dunmor event. We also want to thank the MCHS Cheerleading Squad for all the hard work they put in; Tammy Porter Forgy for making our shirts that turned out great; and, each team that came to play. I thank you; without you all this wouldn't be possible. Thank you for coming and doing something you love for a great cause. Now more scholarships can be given out and I'm blessed to be a part of it."

Smith added that he can't wait until next year with the hope of adding yet another ball field to the mix. This year's tournament literally outgrew the two available fields.

A limited number of Swingin' for Sadie T-shirts are still available. For for more information, contact April Smith at (270) 543-6662. To make a donation, stop by the Beechmont or Greenville Old National Bank locations.

You can also mail your donation to Old National Bank, 3740 Merle Travis Highway, Beechmont, Ky. 42323.

Be sure to let the bank know you wish the donation to go to the Sadie Beth Smith Scholarship Fund.
