Mustangs Looking to Move Up in Three-Team District

muhl mustangs1 300GREENVILLE, Ky. (7/30/14) — Muhlenberg County posted six wins during the 2013 season.

The Mustangs, however, faced a pair of tough tests within Class 6A, District 2. Muhlenberg County couldn't knock off eventual state runner-up Meade County nor Central Hardin (11-2). The Mustangs dropped both district games via shutout. Now, Muhlenberg County will look to make a move in the talent-heavy three-team district with many new skill players on the field.

Showing a vast amount of improvement on the gridiron, Muhlenberg County finished above .500 after exiting the 2012 season with a 2-9 overall record.

The Mustangs notched wins over non-district opponents Webster County, Hopkins County Central, McLean County, Crittenden County, Adair County and Todd County Central during the 2013 season. Besides falling to district rivals Meade County and Central Hardin, Muhlenberg County dropped contests to non-district foes Ohio County, Daviess County and Henderson County. Playing at home, Henderson County pulled away to defeat Muhlenberg County 53-13 in the opening round of the Class 6A Russell Athletic/KHSAA Gridiron Bowl.

Opponents outscored Muhlenberg County 294-241 during the 2013 season.

Top players back for Muhlenberg County include senior offensive lineman/defensive lineman Zeke Merritt and junior tight end/linebacker Hunter Snyder.

The Mustangs must replace numerous playmakers after losing a productive senior class to graduation. Dual-threat quarterback Chase Deason and fellow skill players Anthony Mason, Andrew Vaught, Neil Kirkpatrick, Ryan Pulliam, Nick Huff, Quinton Travis and Maurice Clay all graduated.

Sophomore quarterback Hunter Combs is back after seeing limited action during his freshman campaign.

The first half of the season will test Muhlenberg County as the Mustangs hit the road for four of their first five games.

The Mustangs will visit longtime rival Ohio County for a season-opener on Aug. 22. Kickoff for the Muhlenberg County-Ohio football game is set for 7 p.m..
