Burn Ban Issued by County Judge-Executive

burn ban 1MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (8/2/14) — Muhlenberg County Judge-Executive Rick Newman has issued an executive order banning all outdoor burning in the county until further notice.

According to a proclamation issued Friday, Aug. 1, the ban is in effect until further notice.

The official order states, "due to current and predicted weather conditions and the extreme danger of forest fires in Muhlenberg County, I, Rick Newman, County Judge-Executive of Muhlenberg County, do hereby issue the following Executive Order effective at noon, Aug. 1. All outdoor burning in Muhlenberg County is prohibited under authority of KRS 149.401. This prohibition is in effect until this proclamation has been rescinded by public notice. I urge all Muhlenberg county citizens to comply with this proclamation, so that we can preserve Muhlenberg County's timber resources."

According to the Kentucky Division of Forestry, any violation of a burning ban is considered a misdemeanor punishable by law. Burn bans generally prohibit the burning of forest, grass, crops, woodlands, marshes or other similar areas, burning leaves or debris, campfires, bonfires and warming fires, and open pit cooking and charcoal grilling. The use of fireworks and welding may also be prohibited or regulated.

The latest statistics from KDF indicate that almost 37,000 acres of forests have been lost statewide so far in 2014. According to KDF, the causes of fires in Kentucky this year include 777 due to arson, 276 fires have been the result of the burning of debris and 165 fires were due to other causes.
