Senior Jacob Abbot Excels in Science, Art, Athletics

artGREENVILLE, Ky. (8/5/14) — Jacob Abbott, a 17-year-old senior at Muhlenberg County High School, is a stand out student. Abbot is in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) program at the high school.

STEM is a program in which a student must be selected to enter and must meet rigorous requirements to stay in. Jacob is in the Beta Club and carries a 4.2 grade point average, which places him in the running for valedictorian in the coming year's graduation.

Jacob is on the varsity soccer team where he plays defense and mid field. Jacob really stands out in the field of art. He has won art awards all his life, but the three he is most proud of is the winning of the Beta Club Sweepstakes in which his artwork won three blue ribbons, the winning of two gold keys in the Scholastic art competition and his art work being placed on display at the Brescia College art competition.

"I was born with the talent,” said Jacob. “I love the ocean and I love nature. For a long time, all I drew were landscapes and underwater themes. Lee Ellen Stewart and Ms. Midkiff took me out of my comfort zone and led me to draw other things. My mother also tries to get me to do new things. I get a lot of support from my family."

Jacob says that he loves art but he does not believe that he will pursue that as a career. He also enjoys science and the challenges that field brings.

Jacob is looking at engineering as he would like to build new things and help people. Abbot currently has not picked out a university to attend but he plans to look closely at schools over the coming school year.

Jacob lives on a farm ,where his family raises angus beef cattle. He has and works his own green house.

"I have a green thumb and am very good at growing things," he said.

Abbot attends New Harmony Church and is very active in the youth group.
