HENDERSON, Ky. (8/15/14) — A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is planning to continue inspection work along the southbound side of the US 41 Twin Bridges between Henderson, Ky., and Evansville, Ind., Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 18 and 19, 2014.
However, the inspection will require no lane restrictions on these two days.
Motorists are asked to use caution as inspectors will be climbing on the bridge both days. During most of the inspection activity on Monday and Tuesday inspectors will be out of sight below the bridge deck allowing normal southbound traffic flow. However, from time to time inspectors will be along the curb and railing area as they move along the bridge structure to go about their work. Appropriate caution is required.
All Kentucky bridges get a detailed inspection every two years with long-span river and lake bridges getting an extra walk-through safety inspection annually.
The US 41 Twin Bridges, also known as the Bi-State Viet Nam Gold Star Memorial Bridges, are located at US 41 mile point 19.649 about a mile south of the Kentucky-Indiana State Line. They carry approximately 37,000 vehicles per day across the Ohio River between Henderson, Ky., and Evansville, Ind.
The bridges are located about a mile downstream from the confluence of the Green River and the Ohio River at Ohio River navigation mile point 786.8.
The northbound bridge was opened to traffic on July 4, 1932. The southbound bridge was opened to traffic on Dec. 16,1965.Timely traffic advisories for the 11 counties of KYTC Highway District 2 are available by going to www.facebook.com/kytcdistrict2.
