This training is designed to educate individuals who are interested in becoming a certified ombudsman or friendly visitor for nursing and personal care home residents in Daviess, Hancock, Henderson, McLean, Ohio, Union or Webster counties.
Certified ombudsmen complete a 25-hour free training which includes classroom instruction and one-on-one training in the field. Friendly visitors receive four hours of training.
New volunteers will be asked to fill out required paperwork that includes a background check and conflict of interest forms. Once the paperwork is completed, the volunteer will then proceed with training and certification.
Ombudsman Program participants make visits at least once a month.
Nearly two-thirds of nursing home residents have only one visitor a year, according to Sheila Howard, GRADD Ombudsman.
“Our volunteers help residents resolve any concerns that may arise,” said Howard. “But they also provide socialization—someone to chat with and share life experiences.” GRADD currently has 11 certified ombudsmen to serve 26 facilities across the region. “One of the greatest benefits is the satisfaction of knowing that you have made a difference in a resident’s life,” noted Howard. “Volunteers are also rewarded through building friendships with residents and becoming part of a caring team.”For more information or to sign up for training, please contact Sheila Howard at (800) 928-9094.
