HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (4/23/13) – The Hopkins County school board continues to make progress toward its goal of appointing a new superintendent for the Hopkins County Public Schools.
The board met Monday night to establish key position criteria to be used by the screening committee and the board, as required by board policy 02.1. By the end of the meeting, eight key position criteria were established.
“The Board was very deliberate in the development of its position criteria,” said Phil Eason, a consultant with the Kentucky Association of School Administrators, who is assisting the board. “In doing so, the Board considered the preferred candidate qualities of individual board members, district survey results, and feedback from other stakeholders.”
According to Eason, this was an important step in the process and the leadership represented on the Hopkins County Board of Education was extremely beneficial.
“Keep in mind that the key position criteria will be the basis for screening applicants, developing interview questions and completing candidate evaluations, ultimately leading to a final selection of the next superintendent for the Hopkins County Schools,” said Eason. “So, this was a critical step in the process, and the Board worked together extremely well in prioritizing its key position criteria. So, we are in good shape at this point.”
Next, the superintendent screening committee, using the key position criteria, will screen the applications and make a recommendation on a list of finalists to the Board by May 7. To ensure the reliability of the process, Eason indicated the screening committee will be asked to keep the position criteria confidential until all interviews are completed by the Board of Education.
The Hopkins County Board of Education appears to be on schedule to begin its interviews of the finalists on May 13 and appoint a new superintendent by May 17.
“It’s a lot of work and requires a lot of time and attention from the board and its screening committee,” said Eason. “We have to remember, all of these people are volunteers in this process, and they have other professional responsibilities, too, but clearly they are very committed to the students of the Hopkins County Schools, and this community is fortunate to have these parents, and staff members leading this process on its behalf.
Eason said the screening committee will receive training on its specific role in this process on April 24 along with receiving all applications.
