HENDERSON, Ky. (4/3/13) – The Henderson County High School head football coach has been selected. At 10:00 p.m. on April 1, Tony Lewis, the current head football coach from Reitz High School in Evansville, Indiana, accepted the position.
Lewis has served as a head coach for 11 years including successful stints at Wheelersburg High School (Ohio) with an overall record of 47-21 and Reitz High School. Lewis also served as an assistant coach at Reitz High School for ten years before taking the head coaching position at Wheelersburg High School. His return to Reitz High School was extremely successful, including an Indiana State Championship in 2009 with a record of 15-0. While at Reitz High School, Lewis’s overall record was 53-11. During his coaching career, Lewis has assisted with girls track, boys baseball, basketball and wrestling. He also served as head coach for girls softball at Reitz High School in the 1990s.
Lewis has a master’s degree in education from the University of Southern Indiana and a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana where he was on the Dean’s List for Academic Excellence. Lewis also attended Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana. He began his college career in 1986 at Ohio Northern University where he also made the Dean’s List and played quarterback for their football team.
"Tony is excellence personified. He demands it from his players, and he demands it from his coaches,” said Mater Dei head football coach, Mike Goebel. “He has had success at every level, and he is well-respected by his peers (SIAC Coach of the Year). We’re going to miss him in the Evansville community. He is class in every sense of the word."
"Tony has a passion not only for the game of football, but he has a passion for helping young people. He has a gift of being able to communicate with people young and old. The kids and coaches will love Tony. There is no flash to Tony, but I can tell you, he is not going to ask anyone to do something he wouldn't do himself. He has learned to delegate when it comes to his assistants, and he's a tireless worker,” said Bob Gaddis, head football coach at Columbus East High School (Indiana). “Nobody will outwork Tony Lewis. I got to know Tony when he was a freshman in high school, and I consider him like a son. Kudos to Henderson County High School for pulling this off. They will certainly benefit from this hire in more ways than one."
Kevin Wright, current head football coach at Carmel High School (Indiana), and former head coach of Indiana State Champions, Indianapolis Warren Central, highly recommended Coach Lewis. "He is an outstanding coach and teacher who was able to come right in and win a state championship at one of Indiana's legendary programs (Reitz). His teams have always been very well-coached, and I have enjoyed watching his innovative approach on offense. In my opinion, he is one of the best coaches in the state. I'm sure he will be very successful at Henderson County High School as he tackles his new challenge."
Lewis was selected from a pool of 47 applicants from Kentucky, Indiana, Georgia, Alabama, Wisconsin, Tennessee, South Carolina, Michigan and Ohio. A local search committee narrowed the applicants and interviewed 14 candidates over a period of four weeks.
“This search has proven that the process works. The committee screened applicants with the help of community and school personnel. Members of the screening and search committees had vast knowledge of football both in Kentucky and around the nation. We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Tony Lewis to Henderson County High School,” said Principal Sally Sugg.
Henderson County High School Athletic Director Vivian Tomblin agreed that Lewis is a great hire for Henderson County football.
“I am looking forward to working with Coach Lewis in beginning spring practice and getting him acquainted with staff, parents, the community, and especially our players. I feel he is a great fit for our team. We welcome Coach Lewis and his wife, Candy, to the Henderson County High School athletic family,” Tomblin said.
“I’m extremely excited about the opportunity that Henderson County High School and its football program present. I would like to thank Mrs. Sugg and the search committee for selecting me to be their next head football coach,” said Tony Lewis. “I believe it is an honor that is not to be taken lightly. I have been blessed to be a part of a wonderful football program at Reitz High School over the past five years. Their community is extremely supportive of their football program, and it was a very tough decision to leave. I have made lasting friendships that I will always treasure. My wife and I look forward to becoming a part of the community in Henderson, Kentucky. I want to challenge myself in carrying on the rich football tradition of Henderson County High School, and I will do everything in my power to bring it another state championship!”
Lewis will start his position as Henderson County High School head football coach immediately.
