Henderson County High School Program Earns ‘Gold Level Certification’

hend high 300HENDERSON, Ky. (3/19/13) – LAUNCH, one of the School-Based Enterprises (SBE) at Henderson County High School was among 166 school-based enterprises in the United States achieving Gold Level Certification (or Gold Level Re-certification) this year. This student group will be recognized at DECA’s International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California. This is the first year LAUNCH has operated and is to be commended for this achievement. With the assistance of his advisor Courtney Melton Givens, Will Tucker, a student at HCHS, authored and assembled the 52 pages of evidence required for certification.

School-based Enterprises are effective educational tools in helping to prepare students for the transition from school to work or college. For many students, they provide the first work experience; for others, they provide an opportunity to build management, supervision and leadership skills. While some in the education community have only recently discovered the value of school-based enterprises, marketing educators and DECA advisors have used them as a powerful learning lab for more than four decades.

DECA’s School-Based Enterprise (SBE) Certification Program was developed to provide recognition for outstanding achievement by school-based enterprises and to motivate these groups to strive for excellence and growth.

School enterprises can be certified at three levels: Bronze, Silver or Gold. In order to apply for the certification, SBE must submit extensive documentation that demonstrates adherence to various marketing standards. After the documentation is submitted, a review committee evaluates the documentation to determine which level of certification has been achieved.

DECA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit student organization preparing its members for careers in marketing, management, finance and hospitality. DECA operates in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, Canada, Germany and Mexico through charters held by each state’s/province’s department of education. DECA has nearly 200,000 members nationwide.

Henderson County High School students earned recognition at their events: Brendi Owens won 1st place in Marketing Management, and Will Tucker won 3rd place in Business Services Marketing at the DECA state competition earlier this month.
