Local Student Completes PEPP Program

CierraBrownHOPKINS COUNTY, KY (10/13/12) – Cierra Brown, a May 2012 graduate of Hopkins County Central High School, recently completed the Professional Education Preparation Program at University of Louisville.

The purpose of the program is to reach out to incoming freshmen from rural areas who are interested in becoming doctors or dentists and hope to return to their home county or a similar area to practice.  The program offers a unique and exciting opportunity to experience a college environment, clinical and hospital activities, and explore careers in medicine and dentistry.
 
The primary focus of the UK PEPP Scholars Summer Program is college preparation and clinical/hospital experiences in medicine and dentistry. UK PEPP Scholars will experience college dormitory life and participate in a variety of activities at UK Chandler Medical Center, UK Hospital, UK College of Medicine, and UK College of Dentistry. Health-related seminars, as well as staff support regarding the admissions process for medical and dental school, are important components of PEPP.
 
Brown is the first person chosen from Hopkins County. While in high school, she participated in Madisonville Community College's dual credit program in health sciences. She completed several hours of college classes, her nursing assistant certification and obtained her industry certification in Allied Health by passing Kentucky Occupational Skills Standards Assessment.
 
Brown was given the opportunity to participate in classes that prepared her for the fall.

"This has been a wonderful experience and a preview of what college life is going to be like," Brown said. She thanked program coordinator Katie Leslie for considering her for the program and for setting up the guest speakers and activities.  
 
Cierra is completing her education at University of Kentucky where she is pursuing a bachelor's degree in nursing. She plans to work towards a doctorate in physical therapy. She is the daughter of Eric and Melissa Brown of Madisonville.
