Santa Visits Madisonville School, Raises RFL Funds

breakfast with_santa_coverMADISONVILLE, KY (12/2/12) – Santa Claus took some time out from his Christmas preparations, leaving the work to his elves Saturday morning so he could spend some time with area kids to raise money for Hopkins County Relay for Life (RFL).

Last week, SurfKY News spoke with Hopkins County Committee RFL Fundraising Chair Jeremy Smith about the first ever Breakfast with Santa, and he was hopeful that it would help raise much needed funds for the organization (click here for original article).

Kids and parents showed up to West Broadway Elementary School in Madisonville beginning at 9:00 AM and enjoyed a hot meal as Santa made his rounds, visiting the wide-eyed youngsters in the school’s cafeteria. Later, Santa made his way to a classroom, where he was available for photos with the kids.

Smith described the turnout for the breakfast as “better than we anticipated.” In less than an hour, the breakfast had already collected over $500 for RFL, and a steady stream of families and eager children continued to file in the cafeteria with two hours to go.

The RFL team for the First Methodist Church team was on-hand as well, setting up a craft table to raise RFL funds, separate from the fundraising totals for the breakfast itself.

Hopkins County Committee members donated the food for the event, according to Smith, who added, “Just about everybody in the committee pitched in. Goldenrod pitched in too. They provided 50 cartons of milk and 50 cartons of orange juice. Madisonville doughnuts donated two extra boxes of doughnuts. All of the pictures will be developed by Walgreens. They’re donating all of that.”

Encouraged by the unexpected response, Smith said that he hopes that a meal with Santa can become an annual event with RFL, perhaps moving the event back later in the day to lunchtime. “… Maybe a little closer to [Christmas Parade] time,” he said. “That way we can get people who are on their way to the parade. We may do hot dogs, milk, cookies, and stuff like that. It’s not set in stone yet, though.”
