DUE TO HEAVY SNOWS IN WESTERN KENTUCKY...WIDESPREAD 6 TO 12 INCH SNOWFALL AMOUNTS HAVE HAULTED AREA TRAVEL. ISOLATED 15 INCH AMOUNTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED. Highway deaths 02 black 300FRANKFORT, KY (3/12/13) – Preliminary statistics indicate that 10 people died in nine separate crashes on Kentucky’s roadways from Monday, Mar. 4 through Sunday, Mar. 10, 2013.
 
–One double-fatality, motor vehicle crash occurred in Henry County. Neither of the victims was wearing a seat belt.
–Two single-fatality, motor vehicle crashes occurred in Jefferson County. One of the victims was not wearing a seat belt and one of the crashes involved the suspected use of alcohol.
–One single-fatality, motor vehicle crash occurred in each of the following counties: Ballard, Grayson, Hopkins, Laurel and Letcher. The victims in Ballard, Grayson, Hopkins, Laurel and Letcher counties were not wearing seat belts. The crashes in Ballard and Hopkins counties involved the suspected use of alcohol.
–One motorcycle crash occurred in Greenup County.

Through Mar. 10, preliminary statistics indicate that 98 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2013. This is 28 less than reported for this time period in 2012. Of the 86 motor vehicle fatalities, 44 victims were not wearing seat belts. One of the three motorcycle fatalities was not wearing a helmet. Eight pedestrians have been killed. One fatality involving an animal drawn vehicle has been reported. A total of 23 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
 
As of Mar. 10, Kentucky has had 21 days with zero highway fatalities reported during 2013.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
 
These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
