MADISONVILLE, Ky. (3/13/13) – The Hopkins County Salvation Army held its annual Appreciation Celebration last night. Representatives from both Hopkins and Muhlenberg Counties were present to receive their awards for their charitable donations and time.

Lisa Berry, the Store Manager started the awards ceremony with presenting the awards for the media. This year, reporter Amber Mena was on hand to gladly to accept the award for SurfKY News. The Messenger and the Chamber of Commerce were also recognized for their contributions with getting the word out for the Salvation Army.

Chip Tate presented the school and scout division winners for ringing the bells. This year’s winner was Hopkins County Central High School Air Force Junior ROTC. This is the ROTC’s fourth year and now proud owners of the bell trophy. These students also won the “Great Idea” award for coming up with the 2012 “Fun Walk,” which was a 5k run/walk and all proceeds went to the Salvation Army.

Kassy Holmes presented the awards for the Angel Tree sponsor locations which included Wal-Mart, Baptist Health and General Electric. She stated, “Without these locations and sponsors it would be really difficult for us to take care of Christmas for these kids each year.” She also presented an award to a volunteer who went above and beyond expectations. This year’s winner was Lee Haly. Debby Myers, Board Chair expressed, “We also want to thank those who stood out in the cold to ring the bells and those who contributed, organized and made sure the Angel Trees got where they needed to be.” The student Leadership awards this year went to both West Broadway Elementary and Browning Springs Middle School for all their hard work during Thanksgiving. These students took their time to give back by coming in and serving and waiting tables.

Major Phillip Lance announced his retirement, “This is my last Christmas with you all, I will be retiring next June and going up the road 15 miles where I have my farm but there will be a new a new officer who will take my place.”

Debby Myers wanted everyone who came out to accept their awards to know, “We want to thank everyone for all you do to support the Salvation Army and our community. We are grateful for your time, it is the one thing that you give away and can’t get back so thank you again for coming out tonight.”
