rotary1 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (4/23/13) – One event that many people look forward to each year is the Rotary Auction.

This year is certainly no different as the Madisonville Rotary Club prepares for the Auction from April 29th until May 3rd. It is a huge project for the 60+ members of the club (plus other community volunteers) to put on the five day event. This year promises to be another successful event as the teams solicit donations from area businesses and individuals for items to auction.

The Auction is the club’s primary funding event each year. Club president, Karen Glenn said: “The Madisonville Rotary Club strives to provide unique and meaningful support to the youth of Hopkins County. The Madisonville Rotary Youth Football Program began in 1948. The Rotary Cheerleader Program began in 1980 and in 1993 was officially sponsored with funding and a cheerleader competition. The Student Loan Program continues to enable many in Hopkins County to achieve their dream of a college education. This year, the club will award $10,000 in scholarships to students at North and Central High Schools (5,000 each).”

Glenn also pointed out that the Madisonville Rotary Club provided the lead gift of $127,000 supporting School Counts. “This has been an extremely successful program benefiting hundreds of Hopkins County youth each year. Most of our programs are self-sustaining providing long term, continuing benefits. Other community support requires annual funding such as direct scholarships and support of critical non-profits such as Red Cross, Salvation Army and Big Brothers – Big Sisters.” Glenn said.

In addition to these significant contributions, Glenn said that the club announced 2013 special pledges to purchase starter blocks for the YMCA swimming pool ($13,000); and, $25,000 to provide a concession stand for the new Archery Building. “The club gets a lot of “Bang for the Buck” because the work is all volunteers (except coaches and referees).” Glenn added.

The club also raises direct contributions through a program called the Black Sheep and sometimes spelled as Blacksheep. According to long-time Rotarian, Bill Metcalfe, a black sheep was penned outside one of the earliest auctions (if not the first). Metcalfe said that there are black sheep. The club has held the auction in many locations; but, downtown was the preferred in the first auctions. Metcalfe said that the club would take over the space of a closed business and have an auction.

The club is also selling tickets to win $5,000. Only 250 of the $50 tickets are being sold. This fundraiser was very popular last year and the club sold all 250 tickets. Contact any Rotarian or call 270-871-6403 for a ticket.

Bill Thomas is directing the Auction this year. It is a big job and Thomas seems well up to the task.
