Public Library Extends Helping Hands for Computer Literacy

hc mad library1 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (4/24/13) – The Hopkins County-Madisonville Public Library is currently extending their relations with the community by offering the services people need in order to keep up with the advances in todays society in the realm of technology.

Among many of the different resources available for the public at the library, they’re hosting a technology literacy skills program called, “One-on-One” for individuals who need assistance in learning basic and extensive computer and internet skills.

Technology Coordinator Chuck Coy said, “It’s always been my method of instruction and the library philosophy to assist people or educate them with a one-on-one approach to learning. The idea we embrace is to put the participants at ease with technology immediately so that they’re comfortable and relaxed. People are afraid to look foolish and in learning something completely foreign, it can make a person feel intimidated. A person should not be disrespected simply because they’re not computer savvy. It is especially the case with elderly people who haven’t been exposed as personally with technology. Nationally, libraries have become a place for all communities to access technology and the educational resources regarding it. It’s because technology has become so pervasive, invading our lives, yet there are still so many people who have not learned basic fundamental computer and/or internet skills. They come in to perform some online task that is required or accessible only online, whether it be tax forms, job applications, or any other area where the only access they have to what they need is a computer, then it just snowballs from the start. You may have to have an email address or routing number or log-in name and number, and so on. More than anything we want to let the public know they have friends at the library who can help.”

You are not required to have a library card in order to access the computer services there, although Hopkins Co. residents are strongly encouraged to get one, as Coy explained, “It makes the process of accessing the computers and online sites easier when you have a membership because you’re given specific identification codes.” There is no fee to gain membership at the public library if you are a Hopkins Co. resident, nor is there a fee if you live outside of Hopkins Co. but still maintain employment or own property in the county. Out of county residents may apply for a card, but there is a $20 fee for membership.

One-on-One is an ongoing program at the library. There are no specific workshops scheduled for any training through the library as of now, but they have been granted a classroom at the new location where they plan to host workshops and scheduled computer classes once they open there. Until then, community members are encouraged to visit the local public library to take advantage of the resources offered there in computer literacy. They have implemented many other beneficial programs to aid the community in literacy and education as well. SurfKY News will be following up with library Director Joel Meador and Children’s Librarian Angel Killough to get details on some of the other resources offered there and will inform the public as we do so.
