Gas Line Struck with Backhoe on Scott Street

madisonvillefire2 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (4/26/13) –– On Thursday, April 25, the Madisonville Fire Department (MFD) received an alert from Central Dispatch regarding a natural gas leak at Scott Street and McCoy Avenue.

According to MFD officials, Madisonville City employees working in the area had accidentally dug into a natural gas line with a backhoe. Engine-15 arrived on scene and staged their apparatus at Hall Street. Engine-15 crew advised Engine-17 to approach the scene from McCoy Avenue. Atmos Energy was dispatched to the scene by F-1. Engine-15 crew checked the area where the backhoe had been digging up a concrete sidewalk and found a 2" natural gas line with a 2" X 1/16" cut with natural gas venting. The immediate area around the leak was blocked off.

Houses adjacent to the leak were checked and if occupied they were advised to stay inside until the natural gas leak was mitigated. Atmos Energy arrived and stopped the leak. No further action was required. All units returned to station.
