HENDERSON, Ky. (4/26/13) – On Thursday, the Henderson Police Department hosted a Youth Citizen’s Academy from 4 p.m. 6 p.m. In addition to a pizza party, participating students who attended a minimum of five sessions were given a certificate, t-shirt, and were entered in various drawings throughout the night.

According to Henderson Police Department Public Information Officer Jennifer Richmond, the Henderson Youth Citizen’s Academy was started because Henderson County no longer provides school resource officers in its schools. An adult Citizens Academy has been in Henderson County for about ten years, but with no Resource Officers in schools, Henderson recognized the need for such a program. In the program, students learn an introduction to law enforcement, what makes up a police department, internet safety, emergency preparedness, crime scene investigation, and fingerprinting.

“It’s just a very positive program,” Richmond said. “We want students to feel very comfortable around us.”

Graduates of the Henderson PD Youth Citizen's Academy at South Middle School include Olivia Bien Aime, Conner Book, Breana Breedwell, Dominic Burgess, Dorian Burgess, Trey Calhoun, Mar-Kera Chambers, Landon Coomes, Daci Dawson, Kedron Gray, John Hortin, David House, Destiny House, Sanaa Jackson, Cassidy Kitchens, Alaina Nail, Ralynn Overfield, Cody Pinkston, Travona Posey, Davia Wilson, and Sierra Wilson.

The Youth Citizen’s program is eight weeks in length, and is only held at one middle school in Henderson per semester. Last fall, YCA was held at North Middle School, and at South Middle School this spring. Students must attend at least five of the eight classes to be eligible for graduation. As part of the graduation event, students are bussed after school to the Henderson Police Department, where the party is held. Students also get the opportunity to train on a police firearm simulator during the night, if they choose.

Richmond said that in the fall, the Youth Citizen’s Academy will also include to Henderson High School, if all goes according to plan.
