Rash of Storm Grate Thefts Throughout Madisonville

grateMADISONVILLE, Ky. (7/9/13) – The Madisonville Police Department has reported that there has been a rash of storm grate thefts from yards and streets throughout the city.

These thefts have been continuous from May to July. According to MPD official Jason Lutz, roughly 30 grates have been taken, leaving potentially dangerous openings exposed to both vehicles and pedestrians. These openings could possibly lead to very serious injuries and vehicular damage.

Police officials have stated that they believe there is a white pickup truck possibly involved in the thefts. It has been seen on video that the truck stops, the driver and passenger exit the vehicle and remove the grates, and leave the scene.

LT. Lutz with the Madisonville Police Department has stated that they have gotten several leads on possible suspects, but nothing set in stone at this point. Lt. Lutz told SurfKY News that it is suspected, but not positive, that the truck in question is possibly a white Ford F150.

Various size grates have been reported as stolen.

Police officials suspect that the suspects are scrapping the grates for money.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $250.00 reward for the apprehension of the individuals involved. Any tips can be made to Detective Jason McKnight or Ptl. Bill Strader with the Madisonville Police at 270-821-1720. Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers at 270-825-1111.
