Dr. Bill Thomas Honored by Rotary Club

Bill ThomasMADISONVILLE, Ky. (7/22/13) – The Madisonville Rotary Club has named Bill Thomas Rotarian of the Year.  Thomas served as Rotary Auction Chairman this year, President of the Club in 2011 and as an officer and board member for several years.

The Rotarian of the Year is awarded to a club member that has demonstrated great commitment to the Club and its projects and has gone above and beyond to promote the club and its mission of helping the youth of Hopkins County.  Bill has displayed these qualities during all of the 10 years he has been a member.  His leadership and hard work have always stood out, but he was especially helpful to the club this year in leading the auction.

He came to Kentucky from Ellijay, Georgia, in 1989, to pursue his calling to ministry at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS), Louisville, Kentucky, where he earned the Doctorate of Music Ministry (DMM) in 2005.  He also holds a master’s degree from that same institution, and undergraduate degrees in music education (bass trombone) from Kennesaw State University, Marietta, GA, and Reinhardt College, Waleska, GA.  Thomas has served churches as a full-time, ordained, musical clergyman for almost 20 years.  His history in this vocation goes back more than 30 years as a bi-vocational minister in Georgia and Kentucky.  After coming to Madisonville to serve the First Baptist Church as Associate Pastor for Music and Worship, in 2003, Dr. Thomas was invited to the Madisonville Rotary Club by current honorary member Morris Yates. He had already served the Hodgenville (KY) Rotary Club for the previous 6 years.

Bill’s community involvement includes Leadership Hopkins County Alumnus 2011-12, The West KY Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society (newsletter editor), Master Gardeners, Director of the Madisonville Community College Singers, Home Builders Association of Hopkins County, Director of The Messiah Community Chorus, and serves as Assistant Den Leader in Cub Scout Pack 811.

Rotary holds a special place in Thomas’ heart.  “Our commitment to servicing the youth of Hopkins county and striving for positive influence in our youth culture is paramount in our goal to see all age groups improve and help make our community ‘The best town on earth.’ I am deeply grateful that my fellow Rotarians nominated me for such an honor.  I follow a long line of men and women who have unselfishly given of their time and resources, setting the example for the rest of us to work hard and make our communities more highly educated, prosperous, and culturally verdant for generations to come.  Thank you Madisonville Rotary Club and all residents of Hopkins County.”
