Madisonville Parks and Recreation Committee Seeking Vendor Input on Spray Park

fetus claybon1 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (8/1/13) – The Madisonville Parks and Recreation Committee reviewed the water/spray park master plan from Brandstetter Carroll during its meeting Wednesday morning at City Hall.

The committee identified several key areas for the spray park that has been in the planning stages since former Madisonville Mayor Bill Cox's administration. The proposed location of the park has moved from Festus Claybon Park to the planned Mahr Park and back again.

With $258,000 left in its budget from coal severance money originally earmarked for a study about relocation of the CSX Railroad tracks from downtown Madisonville, the committee is looking at a park that can be both attractive to citizens as well as maintainable.

Madisonville Parks Superintendent Chris Taylor told his fellow committee members that having equipment that does not require removal during winter would be worthy of consideration.

Madisonville Community Development Director Daron Jordan noted that the majority of the costs would be production costs and recommended that City Engineer Bill Jackson investigate possible vendors for various water and spray park fixtures to facilitate discussion for the next meeting.

Mayor David Jackson said other funds for building the park include $25,000 out of the mayor's contingency fund, which totals about $258,000 in available funds. The entire project is estimated to cost approximately $350,000, he said.

Jackson said he favors appointing a fund-raising committee to obtain the additional $92,000 to complete the project.

"I'm excited to be finally moving forward on this project," said Jackson. "And, we truly appreciate fiscal court being flexible on the location."

Fiscal court voted to acquiesce to the change in location during its July 23 meeting.
