Muhlenberg Painter Joins Fight for KB

pray kb paintingMUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (8/5/13) – As the story of Caleb Harvell's fight with cancer has spread throughout the county and the region, numerous fundraisers have taken place.

Now, a touching painting by artist Mary Mae James of Central City is taking its place in the effort, as yet another way to raise funds for the 19-year-old firefighter known simply as KB.

Like many in the county, Ms. James found out about the plight of Harvell through word of mouth.

"We have a neighbor named Rondal Hambrick, who is a member of the Central City Fire Department and a crew chief at the Wendell Ford Regional Training Center,” said James. “Ron was telling me about a young fireman in the Greenville Fire Department who had been diagnosed with cancer. Ron was feeling so bad and wanted to do something to help the family. So I told him that I've done many paintings to raise funds for our church and other causes when I lived in Florida. I told him I will do the painting if he would take care of the raffle since I don't have many connections in that area. Ron said that he would like it to be on the theme of a fireman, so he brought over his coat and hat, along with fire equipment and I made the painting."

Hambrick told Surfky.com News, "When I first found out about Kalb's situation, it was devastating. Especially when it's a fellow firefighter. It's just something that affects all of us firefighters in the county. We are a brotherhood. She was honored to do the painting, and I thought she did an excellent job, for a good cause, and a great kid."

Caleb's father, Phillip Harvell is also a fireman, and has been giving daily updates on KB's progress on Facebook at "Fight Like KB".

The raffle for the painting is tentatively set for September 20th. Tickets are available at On Main at 133 South Main Street and at Greenville Fire Department, and at Trophy Connection in Copper Creek Shopping Center in Powderly.
