MADISONVILLE, Ky. (8/15/13) – On September 14, 2011, an amazing thing happened on a football field.
It was a game that no one in attendance will ever forget. On that day a 10-year-old football player had the play of his dreams. It was the only play he ever played for his elementary school football team, the Hanson Hunters. In that one play, Scotty Schaefer made a touchdown and the other team never laid a hand on him. On February 13th this year, Scotty’s body finally gave up to the condition that medical science could not overcome and Scotty passed away. To see his obituary Click Here.
Scott Austin Schaefer was an inspiration to all who touched his life and the Madisonville Rotary Club is no exception. The club has sponsored the Rotary Youth Football Program for over 60 years. Never has a number been retired. This year only one #51 jersey was made for any team and that one “51” will be presented to Scotty’s parents.
In the above photo, Rotarians left to right Danny Koeber, Tom Toler, and James Barritt (Football Commissioner) display Scotty’s jersey and show the new jerseys for this year. The equipment has been handed out to the teams and the 2013 season is about to begin.
This year there will not be a number “51” on the field.
