House Districting Plan, Fair or Not

stumbo Speak 500

FRANKFORT, Ky. (8/16/13) – Recently the House Democrats revealed a new house redistricting plan which has resulted in a wide variety of responses from Democrats and Republicans, as well as many citizens.

“I’m pleased that Speaker Stumbo is, at least on its face, moving toward a fairer plan for redistricting,” said House Republican Leader Jeff Hoover. “Last week when we revealed our redistricting plan, we made a concerted effort to treat both Republicans and Democrats, and incumbent legislators in a fair and equable manner.”

Hoover went on to state, “While we haven’t reviewed the details of his plan, which will we do before the start of the Special Session on Monday at least on its face we believe this proposal is moving toward a better approach on redistricting.”

In response to this statement, Kentucky State Representative and Hopkins County native Ben Waide said, “Every voter in Hopkins County should be offended by this plan. There is absolutely no reason to split Madisonville up the same way you do Louisville and Lexington. The people of Hopkins County deserve better. The constitution requires that counties be kept as whole as possible. The democrat plan did not do that in Hopkins County.”
