Blue Collar Comments – To Serve and Protect

bluecc300 DHOPKINS COUNTY, KY (8/26/13) – I would like to thank the Sheriff of Hopkins County for allowing me to do a ride-along with two outstanding officers recently.

The first has 20 years’ experience and the second has only recently joined the Sheriff’s Department.

I started at 6:00 PM and rode with them until 6:00 AM, the next morning. During that time we went to the racetrack on Nebo Road on a call. The Deputy did a great job.

What I can’t understand is that it seems as if people on the road cannot see or hear when the Deputy has blue lights and sirens on.

Once we arrived on the scene, the Deputies took care of the problem. After that I left with the second Deputy at around 9:30. There were calls that we answered to, and the Deputies did an outstanding job. I stayed in the car during the cases, but he told me what went on at the different calls.

I have done ride-alongs with the city, county and the State Police. The past ride-alongs were during the daytime hours. Let me tell you that the evening hours are a totally different world. But regardless, these men and women do an outstanding job.

There was one call that we went to that makes one think about what these men and women do, and the dangers they face to protect our area. We were called to an incident and the State Police were there when we arrived. The officers got ready to walk back to where they had to deal with an issue. This was around 2:00 AM. The officer that I was with told me that if I heard gunfire, that I was to get on the radio and tell the dispatcher “Shots Fired.” The Deputy also had the spotlight on the car. The officers checked for guns, spoke with the individual, and the call was taken care of without anything happening.

In closing, I would like to remind our citizens to remember the men and women of the Fire Department, city police, Sheriff’s Department and the state Police. These folks have family. They are normal people, like us. Nevertheless, when they put on those badges and uniforms, they focus on us, protecting our lives and homes. So, if you see them out, take a moment to thank them and shake their hands. Also, say a prayer for them.

I rest my case!

Scott Rogers
