Celebrate Literacy Hopkins County Planned for 2014

read book 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (10/25/13) — Thanks to generous sponsorships from the Hopkins County Education Foundation, Baptist Health Madisonville, Title I funding, and Ruby Lodge, the visiting author for the March 2014 Celebrate Literacy Hopkins County week will be one of the legends of American children's literature, Bruce Coville.

Bruce has published more than 100 books for children and young adults, including the international bestsellers My Teacher is an Alien, My Teacher Glows in the Dark, Aliens Ate My Homework, The Monster's Ring, the Unicorn Chronicles series and many others. His works have been translated into more than ten languages and have won multiple children's choice awards. He has been, at various times, a teacher, a toymaker, a magazine editor, a gravedigger, and a cookware salesman. He is also the founder of Full Cast Audio, an audiobook publishing company devoted to producing full cast, unabridged recordings of material for family listening. He lives in Syracuse, New York, with his wife, illustrator Katherine Coville.

Bruce will visit Hopkins County Schools elementary and middle school students March 4-7, 2014 as part of the Literacy Celebration, and he will be the featured speaker at a Chamber Hot Topic Lunch to be held March 6 at Baptist Health Tower.

As part of the Celebrate Literacy promotion, the Chamber will donate an autographed copy of one of Bruce's books to all Hopkins County Schools fourth and fifth grade elementary school classrooms and media centers, and to all middle school language arts classrooms and media centers.

Older teen and adult readers throughout the community are also encouraged to read this year's nonfiction title chosen for Madisonville Community College's Common Reader program, Full Body Burdenby Kristin Iverson, about Iverson's life growing up near the Rocky Flats nuclear weaponry facility in Colorado. The public is invited to hear Iverson speak at the Glema Mahr Center for the Arts at 7 p.m. March 25.
