Short Reprieve in Snow for Saturday; More Freezing Rain Predicted for Sunday

snow truck1 300WESTERN KENTUCKY (12/6/13) — Precipitation in the form of snow is falling throughout much of western Kentucky as of 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6. But it was ice and freezing rain that fell in parts of the region Friday morning that caused slick roads and isolated power outages.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, there is a 50 percent chance of snow continuing through 9 p.m. Tonight. Temperatures will drop to a low of around 14 with northwest winds 9 to 13 mph. Gusts could be as high as 20 mph.

Saturday should be mostly sunny with a high near 27 and a north wind around 10 mph.

After midnight Saturday, the chance for freezing rain and sleet return and become mostly freezing rain after noon on Sunday. There is a 60 percent chance of precipitation.

Monday and Tuesday should be partly sunny with no precipitation. Highs will be around 30 with lows around 14.

Road crews were out throughout the Kentucky Department of Transportation District 2, ploughing and treating roads.

According to Keith Todd with KYDOT, a truck jack-knifed just north of the Hartford Exit around 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6 on the Natcher Parkway. The Ohio County Sheriff's Office and Hartford Police helped facilitate the clearing the scene within an hour.

A salt truck slid off the road along U.S. 60 near Union County High School between Sturgis and Morganfield. Although the truck was damaged, the driver was uninjured.

The KYDOT will maintain staffing and operations tonight treating Caldwell, Christian, McLean and Ohio counties and plowing and treating Daviess, Hancock, Henderson, Hopkins, Muhlenberg, Union and Webster counties.

Some contract salt trucks are running out of the salt dome in Hopkins County, said Todd.
