Frozen Roads Create Driving Hazards; 5 Day Predictions Call for Big Chill

surfky weather ice tree WESTERN KENTUCKY (1/2/14) — As dozens of motorists slipped off the roads in western Kentucky Thursday, forecasts for the upcoming week's weather were not the “clouds with a silver lining” type.

The wetness that fell early Thursday morning quickly froze with dropping temperatures and brisk winds. That generated a multitude of emergency calls for several counties in western Kentucky and a variety of accidents to deal with.

Kentucky State Police Post 2 had worked 18 non-injury collisions and three injury collisions of the minor nature as of 2:50 p.m. Thursday. KSP assisted 13 motorists, who had run off the road that didn't require a collision report.

Temperatures had dipped to 21 degrees as of 2:45 p.m. for the second day of the new year with brisk 20 MPH northwest winds and gusts up to 28 MPH. That put the wind chill factor at 6 degrees.

A low temperature of 13 for Thursday night, sunny skies with a high of 28 for Friday and a low of 21 finishes up the week's forecast.

Temperatures actually warm up for the weekend with a sunny Saturday with a high of seasonably 42 degrees predicted by the National Weather Service. Saturday night into Sunday, there's a 70 to 100 percent chance of snow.

Sunday night, the big chill moves in with a low of 7 degrees in the forecast. The high temperature for Monday is not much warmer with temperatures likely to reach only 10 degrees. Northwest winds 11 to 13 MPH will add to the bitter temperatures.

Tuesday should see a low of around 8 degrees and a high of 15. Wednesday, there's a slight chance of snow with partly sunny skies. The high is predicted at near 29 degrees.
