MADISONVILLE, Ky. (3/6/14) — A Madisonville woman has been charged for misuse of funds from a youth basketball league after a Kentucky State Police investigation.
According to a KSP report, an investigation began Jan. 29 after KPS was contacted by the Hopkins county Attorney's Office.
The investigation revealed suspicious financial activity for the years of 2011, 2012 and 2013 in checking account of the non-profit Hopkins County Central All-American Basketball Association youth basketball.
KSP Det. Lonnie Kavanaugh charged Mia C. Higens, 49, of Madisonville was charged with one count of theft by unlawful taking under $500, which is a Class A Misdemeanor.
According to the report, it was discovered that several improper expenditures were made from the non-profit's checking account including clothes, toys, gourmet food and diet pills that would not be consistent with the operation of a non-profit, youth basketball league.
The account was under Higens' exclusive control, the report said. She had served as president and treasurer of the youth league for the past few years and was the sole signatory of the checking account.
Kavanaugh is continuing the investigation.Higens is being lodged in the Hopkins County Jail.
