Bruce Coville, author of many popular children's series including "My Teacher is an Alien", emphasized the "profound impact" that community literacy has on how well children read, at a luncheon hosted by the Madisonville Chamber of Commerce Thursday.MADISONVILLE, Ky. (3/7/14) —
Coville, a presenter brought to Madisonville for Literacy Week, pointed out that children become "readers at home", highlighting how community values affect family values. If the community provides opportunities to promote literacy, families will begin to promote literacy in the home, too.
Lee Lingo, President of the Chamber, agrees.
"Communication is the foundation for the community," said Lingo.
Coville also accentuated the idea that teachers need to continue to be passionate about teaching kids to read, because it is the only way "fire will be lit" in the children. He said the circle of literacy: practice, proficiency, and pleasure is the key to successful kids. Practicing reading will affect proficiency, and once the child knows that reading is valuable, they will find pleasure in it as well. For more information go to author Bruce Coville's website.
