MADISONVILLE, Ky. (3/20/14) — The Madisonville Police Department reports having received several complaints in reference to a phone scam targeting local residents.
According to an MPD report, victims have received phone calls from a person claiming to work for Microsoft or another technical service.
The caller tells the victim that their computer is infected with a malware or other malicious file and can be cleaned for a fee. The caller then walks the victim through a series of steps which allows them to take control of the victim's computer.
Once done, personal information including credit card information is available to the caller, and malicious malware can be installed on the computer.
Legitimate technical services will not initiate contact by telephone.MPD advises residents to never allow unknown people to remotely access their computers or give out personal information over the telephone.
