DSC 0534UPDATE: MADISONVILLE, Ky. (3/26/14) —The Madisonville Fire Department received an alarm at 9:35 p.m. of a fire behind Aaron's Rent to Own on East Center Street.

Upon arrival, it was determined to be Hawkins Auto Body Shop at 77 Bassett Ave., which was showing flames from outside the structure.

According to a MFD report, a 360 survey was performed by an officer on Ladder 2, who  determined that the heaviest fire was located within the structure near the entry door and was moving into the attic area.

A fire crew was directed to force entry through the door on the A side. Another crew entered the structure and found fire in the restroom area located just inside the entry door.

As fire extended into the attic and vented the roof, all interior crews were evacuated and Engine 4 directed a master stream through the gable vent by use of the deck monitor. Ladder 2 was ordered to reposition and set up an elevated master stream.

After operation of the elevated stream, fire crews were able to re-enter the structure with hand lines to extinguish hot spots located in the attic area.

An extensive overhaul of the fire area was performed to prevent a rekindle.

Fire units determined that the origin of the fire was in the restroom area. Property owner, Dale Hawkins, reported that a trash can was located in the area were MFD determined the fire had possibly started.

Medical Center Ambulance Service, Madisonville Utilities, Madisonville Police Department and Atmos energy assisted at the scene.

A total of six MFD units battled the blaze which caused substantial damage to the structure and contents of the building.

The fire remains under investigation.
