MADISONVILLE, Ky. (3/28/14) ― The Madisonville Police Department initiated a traffic stop that led to the arrest of the driver on DUI charges after he told officers he'd been smoking marijuana and methamphetamines.
According to a MPD report, Officer Justin Jones and Det. Cavanah stopped a vehicle driven by James Shanks, 35, of Owensboro at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 27 on Nebo Road/Industrial Drive in Madisonville.
The report stated that the officers detected a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle and could detect that Shanks was impaired. After a field sobriety test, Shanks was arrested for DUI, third offense, and failure to wear his seat belt. Shanks told officers he had been smoking marijuana and meth.
A search of the vehicle revealed methamphetamine pipes and marijuana.
His passenger, 19-year-old Alyssa Sutherlin, also of Owensboro, was charged with possession of marijuana.
Shanks is being lodged in the Hopkins County Jail.
