MPD to Use Transportation Grant to Enforce Distracted Driving Laws

mpdMADISONVILLE, Ky. (4/4/14) — The Madisonville Police Department will be using an extra $10,000 in federal grant money to help reduce accidents attributed to distracted driving.

The department was awarded the grant through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Division of Highway Safety. The grant will be used to reduce accidents through enforcement and education about distracted driving.

MPD is reminding motorists that it is unsafe and is a violation of state law to write, send or read text-based communication while in motion on the roadway. Also drivers under the age of 18 are prohibited from using a personal communication device such as a cell phone while in motion on the roadway.

The grant will run from April 7 through May 18 and is 100 percent federally funded.
