Business Spotlight - Ameriprise Financial

ameri2David ThomasMADISONVILLE, Ky. (5/9/14) — First founded by John Tappan in 1894, Ameriprise Financial has stayed true to its mission of helping people feel confident about their financial futures.

“We have well over a hundred years of history,” said owner David Thomas. “Also known as IDS, the man who formally founded the company before the Great Depression, sold savings certificates through the depression and never missed a penny of interest. He paid people. Then in 1984, American Express bought the company and then molded it to what it is like today. Then in 2005, they spun us off as a separate public trading company.”

Thomas has a background in mining engineering and worked as a chief engineer at local coal companies.

“In 2000, I made a career change,” said Thomas. “I actually started out with American Express Financial Advisors in Evansville. I commuted every day for two years, then in July of 2002, I qualified to own my own franchise. Most of my clients were here, so it made sense to open here.”

Thomas is a financial advisor and a Certified Financial Planner practitioner.

“I have my CFP designation, which is important because I am a CFP practitioner,” said Thomas. “Ameriprise is one of the leading firms in financial planning. So, my main business is investments and financial planning for both individuals and small businesses.”

Thomas encourages people to invest their money.

“I’ll simplify it,” said Thomas. “First, just do it. That time value of money, even if it’s just a little, the younger you are, better to start. As far as the investing rules go, successful investing is boring, but it’s over time that you are investing. You are able to diversify and stay invested.”

Thomas works really hard to help achieve his clients financial objectives through long-term relationships by providing knowledgeable advice.

“I love what I do. It gives me the chance to just have a conversation with my clients and share experiences,” said Thomas. “I work one-on-one with my clients. I help them understand their financial goals and needs.”

Thomas said that Ameriprise offers him all the tools he needs to successfully help his clients.

“I am a franchise owner,” said Thomas. “Ameriprise gives me a tremendous support. I don’t feel like I am here on my own.”

Thomas opened a second location in Madisonville at the main office of First United Bank.

“I have two locations,” said Thomas. “Last April, First United Bank and I struck a partnership. I am not an employee of theirs, but I have an office in their main branch and provide services for their customers beyond CDs and deposits. It was an honor that they chose me to be in partner with them.”

Thomas said Ameriprise is a company that stands behind its clients, and are able to provide broad resources for them.

Ameriprise Financial of Madisonville is located on 17 S. Main St. Open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
