UPDATE: Second Arrest Made in Death of Phillip Phelps

second arrest murderUPDATE: HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (5/12/14) — Hopkins County Sheriff's Det. Shawn Bean has informed SurfKY News that a second arrest has been made in the murder of Phillip Phelps.

According to Bean, the ongoing investigation into the murder of 24-year-old Phillip "P.J." Phelps resulted in the arrest of Zachary McPeak in Hopkinsville. McPeak was charged at 4:55 p.m. Monday, May 12 by the Christian County Sheriff's Office.

McPeak is being lodged in the Hopkins County Jail.

murder arrestUPDATE: HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (5/10/14) — The Hopkins County Sheriff's Office has made an arrest in the death of a 24-year-old Hopkins County man, whose body was found in a pond on Crowe Cemetery Road in Nebo Friday, May 9.

An investigation by the Sheriff's Office, Madisonville Police Department, Kentucky State Police and the Office of the Commonwealth Attorney led to the discovery of the body of Phillip Phelps, according to a HCSO report.

The investigation led to the arrest of Norman Barassi, 50, Madisonville, and the charge of murder. The arresting officer was Hopkins County Sheriff's Det. Shawn Bean.

The Hopkins County Coroner's Office and the Area 2 Dive Team also assisted in the investigation.

Barassi is being lodged in the Hopkins County Jail on a $100,000 cash bond.

ORIGINAL STORY:

NEBO, Ky. (5/9/14) —The body of a missing man has been retrieved from a pond on Crowe Cemetery Road in Nebo earlier this evening.

Hopkins County Coroner Dennis Mayfield confirmed that the body was that of 24-year-old Phillip Phelps, who has been missing since earlier this week.

The family has been searching for Phelps since he was last seen at about 4 p.m. Sunday, May 4 walking on Murray Street near Browning Springs Middle School.

Mayfield told SurfKY News on the scene that the time and cause of death will not be released until a medical examiner's report has been compiled.
