Meet the District Judge Candidates - David Massamore

HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (5/14/14) — This is the first of a three-day series with interviews of the District Judge candidates that will appear on the May 20 Primary Election ballot in Hopkins County.

Two of the three candidates on the primary ballot will face each other in the November 4 General Election.

David Massamore has been practicing law for 38 years in Kentucky, 30 of which as a prosecuting attorney. Massamore has been practicing civil cases for 24 years, and now he wants the challenge of a new position — as District Court Judge.

David-Massamore MG 9612-ediDavid MassamoreA military veteran and a native of Hopkins County, Massamore hopes to win the primary election May 20 based on his experience and knowledge of the court system.

“I know Hopkins County and the people . . . I’m not going anywhere,” he said.

Massamore told SurfKY that he would like to see more efforts in drug correction. It is cheaper to treat than to incarcerate, and he stands by HB 463, which insists upon long-term drug tests for drug-addicted, convicted criminals, he said.

Massamore has worked with the drug court in Hopkins County and said that because of the treatment, of the 200 people that have graduated, only 10 have re-offended. Although this may sound like a huge accomplishment, Massamore said there is still more work to be done.

“Currently, we aren’t using the assets we have to deal with drugs at the district level,” said Massamore.

Massamore said that if elected he would continue to reach out to facilities like Pennyrile Mental Health to create a list of potential probation programs for offenders. He believes that if more programs are added, it would decrease the probability of the convicts to re-offend.

Massamore said he will not immediately start making changes in the court system. His plan is to shadow the judges for a week, meet with the Bar Association about recommendations and also Madisonville Police to see how they can more effectively use their time.

Massamore grew up in Dawson Springs. He and his wife, Ginger, have three children and five grandchildren. He is active at First Christian Church, and is vice president of the Madisonville Rotary Club.
