Muhlenberg Stars Light Up Palace Stage With Talent

bass champs 1 029GREENVILLE, Ky. (5/31/14) — From a local radio announcer singing the best of Frank Sinatra to a hilarious surprise performance from members of the cast of “Nunsense”, the May 30 edition of Open Mic Friday at the Palace was a real crowd pleaser.

The Muhlenberg Arts Advisory Council and Muhlenberg Community Theatre teamed up in March to present the once-a-month, anything-goes evening to showcase area talent on stage.

Friday's show kicked off with a jazz ensemble made up of David Everly, Kaylon Ward, Mimi Vogler and Ryan Jones. The highly professional sounding light jazz group performed everything from standards like “All Of Me” and “Satin Doll” to a last minute addition, Van Morrison's “Moondance”. Everly, who is the son of the late Rev. Ted Everly and a cousin to Don and Phil Everly, performed a duet with Vogler on the the Everly Brothers' hit “Let It Be Me”. The foursome received a well-deserved rousing response after each song.

Vogler noted that Jones and Ward have both been chosen to be a part of the revered Governor's Scholars Program for outstanding high school seniors.

Bob Dasher of Central City took to the stage with his dolbro, and amazed the crowd by first singing and playing the classic, traditional blues song “House of The Rising Sun”, and blending it into the hymn “Amazing Grace”. The two songs were a perfect match. The audience was then inspired to sing along as Dasher performed the familiar hymn, “In the Garden”.

Richard Neathamer, who spends his afternoons playing good time oldies on the Greenville radio station WKYA, was also a big hit with the crowd. Neathamer donned the familiar looking black hat often worn by Frank Sinatra in concert, and performed his renditions of well known Sinatra tunes including “Come Fly With Me”, “Around the World in Eighty Days” and “I Want To Be Around To Pick Up the Pieces”.

A surprise performance by members of the cast of the upcoming MCTI production of the Broadway musical comedy “Nunsense” complete with habits was also a true crowd pleaser featuring cast members Melanie Smith, Kristen Robertson, Hope Mohon, Ami Clayton, Mari Clayton and Connie Thompson. The play will run June 20, 21, 22, 27, 28 and 29 at The Palace with shows at 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, June 22 and 29.

Also singing Friday night was pre-teen Courtney Peveler. Janie Culton recited a poem for her dog, Bo, with support on stage from her “accompaniment”, a dog she is taking care of from the Muhlenberg Humane Shelter.

The next Open Mic Friday will be the last Friday in July due to the conflict in dates with “Nunsense” in June.

Donations will be taken at the door and profits will go to MAAC and MCTI.
