bicycle hit 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (7/11/14) — A Madisonville man was killed while riding his bicycle at approximately 12:05 a.m. Friday, July 11 on Island Ford Road in Madisonville.

According to a Kentucky State Police report, Jerry L. Simmons, 54, was heading east on Island Ford Road along the centerline, when he attempted to cross from the center of the road to the westbound shoulder. As he was crossing the lane, he was struck by a 2001 Acura passenger car headed west on Island Ford Road.

The report said Simmons crossed directly into the travel path of the car driven by Brock M. Dunbar, 29, Hanson. When the two collided, Simmons was thrown from the bicycle and was pronounced dead on the scene by Hopkins County Deputy Coroner Wayne Burton.

Simmons was not wearing a helmet nor reflective equipment, the report said. Dunbar was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.

Trooper Nathan Craft is continuing the investigation.

He was assisted at the scene by Trooper Joseph Bartolotti, the Madisonville Police Department, Medical Center Ambulance Service and the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office.
