Possible 20 Percent Funding Cut Projected for Muhlenberg Schools System

muhl school board 300GREENVILLE, Ky. (7/16/14) — The phrase no business, agency or entity likes to hear — funding cuts — was brought up during the Muhlenberg County School Board during its regular meeting Monday night.

The treasurer's report showed an ending ledger balance of $6,277,901 for the end of June. Jeff Travis, the Muhlenberg County Schools Finance Officer, told the board that in two years the board may be looking at a 20 percent funding cut due to the closing of TVA's Paducah power plant. A 20 percent cut would equal about $2,000,000 in funding.

During the public participation phase of the board meeting, Robert Smith of the Greenville Country Club addressed the board about high school golf. Smith said he would like to see the Muhlenberg County High School golf team use both Central City and Greenville country clubs courses equally. Currently, the high school golf team practices and schedules matches at the Central City Country Club. Central City Country Club offers a 18-hole course while the Greenville Country Club offers a nine-hole course.

Superintendent Randy McCarty gave information on the open houses at each district school and gave a report on opening day activities.

A representative from Clotfelter-Samokar updated the board on construction projects at Bremen Elementary and the high school tech center. The projects will be finished on time but it will be close, he said.

McCarty reported on the new school board boundaries. Gaylan Spurlin, the Muhlenberg County Clerk, will deliver the redistricted boundaries to the board next week and the board will vote on the boundaries in special session.

The board approved two change items in school construction process, approved the meal costs for the 2014-2015 school year, and approved a list of admission and release committee chair-people for the next school year.

The board also approved the MOVE program for the Renaissance Center. MOVE is an online program in which students at the alternative learning center can complete their high school program both at school and at home, although testing would occur on campus. The program will have 40 open seats the first year, and students must complete the application for entry.

The board considered the construction of Bremen Ball Park. MUSCO gave a lighting quote of $53,420 to install Phase 1 lighting at the fields. This included the stumps where the poles would be located and the conduits for the other parts of the facility.

Tarter, opposed the plan as he did not want to spend any money until, "there is money in the checkbook," he said.

Board chairman Don Richey spoke for the plan as he said that Bremen had been waiting three years for these parks and now was the time to act. The board approved the installation. The projected cost to finish building the two-field park is $177,000 to $188,000.

The board then approved changing the facilities directors job from a certified to a classified position and amended the salary schedule. The change will save the county around $30,000 a year in salary costs.

The board considered and approved continuing its relationship with Muhlenberg Community Hospital and to continue funding the certified athletic trainer position at a cost of $10,000. This position works with the sports teams and provides needed support to help prevent and treat sports injuries.

Lastly, the board approved giving of $2,500 to the Muhlenberg North Middle Beta Club for their national convention and approved the final motion to not remove the book, “Glass Castle”, from the MCHS school library.
